Edna Bay is
quite a long way from the mainland of POW, so I had not visited there
before. So one day, we packed up, borrowed a friend's charter boat,
and motored from
Klawock. The trip was stunning, full of viewings of eagles, sea otters
and whales. It took 2 hours on a fairly fast boat from Klawock, (you
will need a charted GPS or a bunch of charts to do this). It
would be an easier trip from Naukati or to fly in from Craig, Thorne Bay or
Ketchikan. However, we loved the trip, the scenery was breathtaking
(and I thought I was used to the scenery around here!)
Edna bay is a huge bay
dotted with houses here and there. It felt totally quiet and very
remote. We arrived on a Sunday and not a soul was to be seen. It felt
like another world. I was utterly enchanted (but I like to be where lots of
people aren't). We were put in touch with one of the local residents
who told us to pull into his dock (there is a very nice
state dock too) and rented us a car. You can rent a car and an
apartment to stay in Edna Bay, call us for details. The car helped, as
there are lots of long dirt roads. We were lucky a friendly local
decided to help us, as in minutes I was totally lost among the forest roads.
Every now and then a little house would pop up, or a cute church, but mostly
it was forest, water and the surrounding hillsides. There was a
charming
corner store, but it was closed.
I really liked the
location of this property, no houses up or down the road. At the top
of the property there was a small gravel area, good for parking or perhaps
for a small shop. A little way down a boardwalk started. To one
side of the boardwalk was a stream and pond.

The boardwalk starts off the
road, and has a greenhouse to one side. The boardwalk is very weathered and
will need to be replaced.

The boardwalk leads a long
way into the property, this is a very private forest location.

At the end of the boardwalk
you come upon a clearing.

There are a few sheds, the
start of a D-Log structure built above, and a cabin behind it.

The cabin looked ok from the
outside, but we could not get in as it was locked. A third party has
recently examined the cabin and taken the following 6 photos:

We personally have not seen the inside
of the cabin, but here is what we were told: the cabin is ok shape, it
is pretty sound. There was no obvious leaking or rotting. There
is no power or running water and it is unfinished. It is quite small
with a decent barrel woodstove and two plywood beds. There is a camp
stove for cooking and a metal roof.
This is a great little structure to
live in while building or could be done up to be your cabin in the woods.
You would need to set up a rainwater catchment system off the roof, the
creek is close but down a steep embankment. There is a spring in Edna
Bay from which all the residents get their drinking water.

In a nutshell:
The property is heavily forested with
spectacular old growth trees, brush and berry bushes. You really feel
lost in deep forest here, it is quite beautiful. The boardwalk starts
at the road and leads into the property. The cabin sits close to the
edge of the property that is near Charlie Creek. The cabin looks in
reasonable shape but everything else would need to be replaced. The
sheds and boardwalk are rotting and the D-log cabin base has been weathering
too long to be worth building on. This property would suit someone who
really wants to get away from it all and back to the forest. This is a truly
quiet, remote location. There is a lot of work to be done here
removing the old structures, (firewood?) but the cabin is useful, so you
have a base from which to get started. Other good features include the
rock pad by the road and the old gardens by the road. With some brush
clearing this property would really open up into a gorgeous old forest, a
real hideaway, nature retreat.
If you need a Thoreau experience or
love gorgeous trees and want to take care of your own special part of the
Tongass, this property could be for you!

This property has some
amazing big trees! If you are a forest lover, this one could be for
you!

The cabin behind the D-Log
structure. Basically everything except the cabin would need to be
removed.

This would be a gorgeous
location for a cabin! (You could use these D logs for a shed and build
another deep forest cabin right here! Or, just clear it all up, pretty
up the cabin and your Alaska remote escape is ready!)

The forest is stunning, but
all wood here needs work or to be redone or removed. It is a dreamy
little clearing.

This platform is a great
idea, but will need to be redone. It has a wonderful feel though, up
high, surrounded by gorgeous trees, this is truly a forest lover's paradise.
The property has a greenbelt on one side with a stream running through it.
You can hear the stream, and the greenbelt makes the property feel a lot
larger than it is. If you want to feel lost in the woods, this
beautiful property is it!

I am standing in the middle
facing the boardwalk ; the road to the left and the right. The car is
parked near the gravel pad.

The pond near the road also
had a nice sunny place for gardening.
I really enjoyed the quiet forest
location of this property. It really was very beautiful with some of
the nicest old growth forest I have seen on private lots. There is a
lot of work to do here to make it livable, but if you really want a place
away from it all, if you really want to get lost in nature and live or
vacation in a truly remote, small community, this property just might
enchant you...

Block 7 Lot 2 is slightly west of the
middle of the plat. It is adjacent to the greenbelt that Charlie Creek
is on.
